THE TORQUAY HISTORY APP – WHERE IT ALL BEGINS
Torquay is the first stop on The Great Ocean Road with Bells Beach just down the road.
It is on the edge of the ocean, only 90 minutes from Melbourne and 30 minutes from Geelong.
The town was established with the first land sales in 1866. It has always been renowned as a fishing and holiday destination. The population has always grown by thousands during holidays.
Most of the town was wiped out in the 1940 bushfire. Thirty years later it recovered to become the birthplace of Aussie surf culture with surf brands such as Rip Curl and Quiksilver.
