Remembering Ash Wednesday Bushfires

It is 40 years today since over 100 bushfires swept through Victoria and South Australia, killing 75 people and causing widespread damage. High temperatures and intense winds along with dry fuel created the firestorm destroying lives along the way. Many today still feel the trauma from 40 years ago. We have put together images and stories leading up to the day, as the fire burned and the aftermath. You can read the stories in our current edition of History Matters available from Torquay Newsagents or become a digital subscriber to get a copy of the magazine.

We have also published an exhibition of images on our website. https://www.torquayhistory.com/research/exhibitions/
