Our Olympian: Marjorie McQuade

Australia once more is getting off to a good start in the pool with the gold medals moving us to top of the ladder after day 1. Back at the 1948 London Olympics, Torquay’s Marjorie McQuade (b.1934) was dubbed as Australia’s ‘Olympic Baby’ because she was the youngest athlete to compete at the London Olympic Games at the age of 14 years and 11 days. The experience helped her secure three gold medals two years later at the 1950 Auckland Empire Games (Commonwealth Games). Individually, she won the women’s 110-yard freestyle and was a member of the winning Australian women’s teams in the 4×110-yard freestyle relay and the 3×110-yard medley relay.
